The short answer
A 7.5 ft tree needs a bag with at least 50 inches of published length. A 9 ft tree needs at least 60. A 12 ft tree needs 67, and there is exactly one bag on this site that publishes it. The full table is below, with the measuring method underneath it.
The table
The middle column is the typical longest section for a tree of that height, derived from how these trees are hinged and split. The right-hand columns are the minimum published bag dimensions we would buy for it — longest section plus working slack.

Read the middle column as a starting point, not a promise. Trees of the same height differ enormously depending on how many sections they split into. A three-section 7.5 ft tree gives you roughly 34-inch pieces; a two-section one with a one-piece pole can leave you holding 46 inches. This is why the measuring step below is not optional.

The gap between the third column and the fourth is the point of this page. Two bags on the market state that they fit a 9 ft tree, and publish lengths five inches apart. Both statements can be true, because “9 ft tree” is not a measurement of anything that goes in the bag.
How to measure your tree, in two minutes

Take the tree apart as it will be stored
Separate the sections the way you intend to store them. If you plan to leave two joined, leave them joined for the measurement.

Measure the longest single piece
Lay the pieces on the floor and measure the longest one end to end, including any pole spigot that sticks out past the branches.

Add the stand, if it goes in
A folding metal stand adds an inch or two. A molded plastic or cast stand is bulky enough that it is usually better in a bin with the rest of the hardware.

Add three to four inches of slack
A bag packed to its exact interior length will not zip once the branches spring outward against the fabric.

Compare against a published interior length
Buy only from listings that publish dimensions. A listing that states only a tree height has not given you a number you can check.
Width and height matter less, but not none
Length is the constraint that fails. Width and height are the constraints that make the bag annoying: too narrow and the branch sections stack rather than lying beside each other, which makes the bag tall and unstable on a shelf.
As a rule, three branch bundles side by side want about 20 inches of width, which is what the Hearth & Harbor publishes. Fifteen inches, which the Zober publishes, means stacking them, which is fine but makes the load taller. Neither is wrong; they are different shapes of the same volume, and which suits you depends on whether your storage space is limited in width or in height.
If nothing fits
Two options, both legitimate. Store the longest section separately — a single pole section slid behind a wardrobe or along a rafter takes almost no space, and the rest of the tree then fits a much smaller bag. Or store the tree assembled, in an upright bag, which changes the constraint from length to ceiling height and diameter.
