The short version

Tinsel Tote earns a commission when you buy something through a link on this site. It costs you nothing extra. It does not change what we rank, what we say about a product, or which product we put first.

Amazon Associates

Tinsel Tote is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

At the time of writing, Amazon is the only program this site earns from. Some pages mention retailers or brands we do not have an affiliate relationship with — a brand-direct store, a hardware retailer — and links to those earn us nothing. We include them anyway when they are the right answer for the reader.

Buy links on this site pass through a redirect at /go/ before arriving at the retailer. That is a technical convenience, not a tracking system: it lets us change where a product link points without rewriting fifty pages. The /go/ route is excluded from search indexing and blocked in our robots file.

Every commercial outbound link is marked rel="sponsored nofollow" in the page's HTML, which is what Google asks publishers to do and what tells a search engine the link is a paid relationship rather than an editorial citation. Links to manufacturer specification pages and other sources are not marked that way, because they are citations and are not paid.

About the prices on this site

Prices come from a live feed and carry the date they were checked. If a price is more than 48 hours old, it disappears and the cell reads “Check price” instead.

We never type a price into a page and we never carry a remembered one. Retail prices change constantly, and a number that was true last month is worse than no number at all, because it looks authoritative. The price you pay is whatever the retailer is asking when you get there.

What commission does not change

Every ranking on this site is built from the manufacturers' published dimensions and materials, scored on five metrics applied identically to every product. The full method is at how we pick.

Three things follow from that, and they are worth stating explicitly:

  • We recommend cheaper products regularly. Where a $20 container does the job, we say so, even though a $60 one would earn more.
  • Every category page names something not to buy. Those entries carry buy links like every other, and we still tell you not to use them.
  • We tell you when a free method works. Our page on light storage says plainly that a piece of cardboard is an adequate reel for a short indoor strand, on a site that earns commission on light reels.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for a placement or a ranking position.
  • We do not accept free products, and none has been supplied to us.
  • We do not let manufacturers see a page before it is published.
  • We do not publish sponsored posts.
  • We do not claim to have tested products we have not tested, which is a different category of honesty but belongs on the same list.

Why this page exists

The United States Federal Trade Commission requires that a material connection between a publisher and a seller be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Commission on a purchase is exactly such a connection.

So besides this page, you will find a disclosure line above the first buy link on every commercial page, an #ad marker under every buy button, and a permanent statement in the footer of every page on the site.
