How we pick, and what our method cannot tell you

The claim we refuse to make

We have never handled a Christmas tree storage bag, an ornament box, a wreath container or a light reel. Not one. There is no test lab, no sample cupboard, no six-month durability trial.

That is unusual to say out loud in this category, where the standard page opens with a line about having tested dozens of options. Those claims are almost never substantiated with a protocol, a timeframe or a photograph, and they are the easiest thing in the world for a reader to be skeptical about — which is why so many people are typing “reddit” and “wirecutter” on the end of these searches.

So we do not compete on that. We compete on something we can actually do and you can actually check.

What we do instead

1. We read the published dimensions. Every figure on this site comes from a manufacturer's specification page or a retailer's product listing, and every one carries a link to where we read it. Not paraphrased, not “roomy”: the actual numbers, quoted.

2. We compute the fits nobody publishes. Tree height to required bag length. Ornament count and size to box capacity. Roll length to organizer length. Wreath diameter to container diameter. Strand count to reel capacity. Interior height to what stands up inside a bin. These are arithmetic problems with published inputs, and no competitor we surveyed publishes the answers.

3. We show the arithmetic. Where we say a 128-slot ornament box does not fit inside a 66-quart bin, both numbers are on the page with their sources. You can check us in thirty seconds. That is the point.

4. We publish live prices, dated. Prices come from a daily feed. Any price older than 48 hours disappears and the cell reads Check price instead. We never type a price into content and we never carry a remembered one.

5. We name something not to buy. Every category page includes at least one product we would not recommend, with the reason. A recommendation set with nothing excluded is not a recommendation set.

6. We report what is missing. When a maker does not publish a figure, the specification row says so in words. That is a real finding: a product you cannot check before buying is a worse purchase than an identical one you can.

The scoring

Five metrics, applied identically to every product on the site so the numbers compare across categories. Each is scored out of ten and the overall score is their weighted combination.

The score is an editorial judgment built from published data. It is not a test result, and for that reason it never appears in this site's structured data. Marking up a rating we did not measure would be a fabrication dressed as a specification, and it is the one thing in this category we are least willing to do.

Editorial policy

This section is our editorial policy. It lives here rather than on a separate page because a separate page would be thinner and would say the same things.

Independence. No manufacturer has seen any page on this site before publication. None has been offered the opportunity. No product has been supplied to us, and no placement on any page has been paid for.

Commission. We earn a commission when you buy through a link here, and that is how the site is funded. At launch every buy link goes to Amazon at the same category rate, so there is no product we earn more from than another. If that ever changes — if we join a program paying differently — the ranking method does not, and we would say so on this page.

Corrections. If a figure here is wrong, we fix it and note the correction on the page. Manufacturers change specifications without changing product names, so this happens. Tell us at the contact page.

Cadence. Prices daily. Availability monthly. Specifications quarterly, re-read against the current listing. Every category page fully re-verified before 15 October, ahead of the season. Every page carries a visible last-verified date driven by that work rather than by a build timestamp.

What this method cannot tell you

An honest method has to state its limits, so here are ours, plainly.

• Durability. We can tell you a bag is 600 denier. We cannot tell you whether its zip fails in year three, because we have not owned one for three years.
• Fit and finish. Whether a lid closes easily, whether a zip runs smoothly, whether the handles are comfortable loaded. These are real considerations and we have no basis to comment on any of them.
• Accuracy of the published figures. We report what manufacturers publish. If a maker publishes a wrong dimension, we will repeat it, because we have no ruler on the object. We cite the source every time so you can see exactly what we are relying on.
• Quality control variation. Two units of the same product can differ. Nothing in our method sees that.
• Anything sensory. How something feels, smells or sounds. Not available to us, and we will not invent it.

For the questions in that list, buyer reviews on the retailer's own listing are a better source than we are, and we would rather point you there than pretend otherwise.

Who writes this

Scooter M., an enthusiast who got into this the ordinary way: by owning a tree that did not fit back in its box. No credential, no certification, no professional organizing background, and none claimed. The work here is reading manuals, compiling published specifications and doing arithmetic, which is work that does not require a credential and would not be improved by an invented one.
