Storing Light Cords, Clips and Hardware

The strands are the easy part. What costs you an afternoon next December is the box of clips, cords and timers nobody labeled.

The short answer

Store the hardware with the run it belongs to, not by type. Cords go on reels — one reel we read publishes 150 feet of 16 AWG per reel, which is a whole elevation — clips go in a labeled bag inside the same box as the strands they held, and timers, splitters and adapters come indoors and go away dry. Sort by where it was installed and December takes an afternoon instead of a weekend.

The hardware is half the install and none of the advice

Every guide to storing Christmas lights is about the strands. The strands are not the problem. A strand that goes away neatly comes back out neatly, and the reels and boxes that do that job are well covered — the format comparison is on light storage reels versus bags.

What actually costs you an afternoon next December is everything else that came off the house: the extension cords, the clips, the ground stakes, the timer, the outdoor splitter, the spare fuses in their little packet, the bag of gutter hooks. None of it is expensive. All of it is annoying to replace at short notice, and most of it is unidentifiable a year later once it is mixed together in a tote.

Cords are the bulk, and they belong on reels

For a house with an exterior display, extension cord is usually the single largest volume of anything in the box — more than the lights themselves. It is also the item most often stored worst: coiled by hand, dropped in a bin, and pulled out next year in a knot with a strand of C7s through the middle of it.

A reel solves it, and the useful thing is that reel capacity for cord is a published figure on at least one product. Clips: keep them with the run, not with each other

Clips are the cheapest thing in the box and the most useful information in it. Forty clips in a bag labeled “front gutter” tells you next year exactly how many the front gutter takes, which is a number you otherwise rediscover on a ladder.

So: one bag of clips per elevation, labeled by elevation, stored in the same container as the strands for that elevation. Not one big bag of clips. The generic bag is faster to pack and slower every year afterwards.

Whether clips stay on the strands depends on the format. On a reel they should come off, because clipped strands do not lie flat and the clips catch on each other as the reel turns. On shrub runs, stake-mounted runs and short lengths that go into a box rather than onto a reel, leaving them attached is a genuine time saving.

Anything that got wet comes indoors first

Outdoor timers, splitters, adapters and stake sockets collect water during a season. Put one away wet in a sealed box in December and you open a corroded one next winter. This is the most common way exterior light hardware dies, and the fix is free: leave everything somewhere warm and dry for a day before it goes into a container.

The same rule applies to stakes pulled out of frozen ground and to any strand that came off a gutter with ice in it. A rigid box with a latching lid is a good container precisely because it seals — which is also why sealing damp hardware inside one is such an effective way to ruin it.

Once dry, store the electronics indoors rather than in an unheated garage. Timers have small batteries and circuit boards, and both do better in conditioned space. Batteries should come out entirely: the leakage rule that applies to light-up decorations applies here too.

The last row matters more than it looks. Installation tools that end up in a decorations box are tools you cannot find in June when you need them for something else, and their weight is what crushes the light boxes underneath.

What the container needs to do

Hardware storage asks something different of a container than strands do. Strands want reels and a soft bag; hardware wants a rigid box that will not be crushed and a lid that closes over irregular objects. A rigid light-and-garland box with published dimensions around 18 by 15 by 12 inches takes reels and a hardware bag together, which is why the boxed formats stay relevant even though reels do the winding.

Keep the whole exterior kit — strands, cords, clips, stakes — in one container per elevation if you can. The alternative organizing principle, one container per item type, reads as tidier and performs worse: you end up opening four boxes to do one side of the house. The take-down order that makes this work

How do you store extension cords for Christmas lights?
