The short answer
Coil the garland, then buy for the coil. A nine-foot artificial garland coils to roughly a 14 to 18 inch disc, three or four inches deep — our figure, not a published one — and that disc drops flat into a 14-inch square fabric bag or into the ring compartment of a 36-inch wreath container. Two or three coils per container is realistic; six is not.
The conversion nobody publishes
Garland is sold by length, stored by coil, and no maker on either side of that transaction publishes the number that connects them. Container makers publish interior dimensions; garland makers publish a length and a tip count. Nobody states what nine feet of garland becomes once it is a coil, which is the only form it should ever be stored in.
So this table is our own arithmetic, and we would rather say so than dress it up. It is derived from the geometry of coiling a strand into a circle at a radius that does not kink a wire core, and it matches the figure we use on how to store garland after Christmas. Treat it as a planning figure, then measure your own coil before buying.

Depth is what runs out, not diameter
A coil is a flat object, so the diameter question is answered easily by almost any container in this category: a 14 to 18 inch disc fits inside a 36-inch wreath container, a 27-gallon tote publishing 20 1/8 by 14 1/8 inches inside, or a 14-inch square bag section.
What runs out is depth. Coils stack, and each one adds three or four inches for plain garland or four to six for pre-lit. Three plain coils is around a foot; two pre-lit coils is about the same. That is why the containers that work for garland are the ones publishing ten inches or more of interior height, and why a shallow under-bed box — excellent for wrap rolls — is a poor garland container despite having plenty of floor area.
Do not compress the stack to make it fit. Pressure across a coil flattens the foliage on the bottom strand, and on pre-lit garland it presses bulbs against wire junctions, which is the failure that turns a lit garland into a half-lit one.
A long fabric bag. A 14-inch square section matches a nine-foot coil almost exactly, so nothing is wasted, and the 48-inch length means several coils sit side by side rather than stacked. This is the format that suits a household with garland on the stairs, the mantel and the door. It offers no crush protection whatsoever, so it belongs on a shelf rather than under a stack — the trade is on Christmas storage bags versus bins.
A wreath container with an interior compartment. A 36-inch container publishing 10 inches of depth was designed for a wreath and happens to be an excellent garland container: the ring compartment takes coils, the rigid shell resists crushing, and the wreath and its matching garland end up in one place. This is the answer for the household that decorates a door and a porch as one job.
A rigid tote. A 27-gallon stacker publishing 20 1/8 by 14 1/8 inches inside takes a nine-foot coil lying flat with room to spare, and 18 7/8 inches of interior height takes four or five stacked coils. It is the least space-efficient option per garland and the most robust, and it is what you want if the container lives at the bottom of a garage stack.
Pre-lit garland changes the numbers
Every figure above assumes plain artificial garland. A pre-lit strand is meaningfully thicker: it carries a wire run, bulb sockets and often a battery box, and the coil is both wider and deeper as a result. Our working allowance is to add two inches to the diameter and one to two inches to the depth per coil, which is a planning number rather than a measurement.
The battery box, where there is one, comes out of the coil and its batteries come out of it entirely. A cell left in a garland battery box over a summer is the most common reason a working garland is dead by December, and it is entirely preventable.
How many coils per container, honestly
The arithmetic most people want is “how much garland fits in one box”, and the answer is set by depth divided by coil depth, with a margin so nothing is compressed:

Note the pattern: the containers that hold the most garland are not the biggest by volume, they are the ones whose shape matches a stack of discs. Volume is a poor guide in this category and depth is a good one.
