The short answer
The 27-gallon Stacker for ornament boxes and the bulk categories, the 66-quart ClearView for one category per latched bin, a gasket box for anything that must stay dry on a damp floor, the 40-gallon wheeled tote for the heavy garage bin, and one of the two 7-inch boxes for under a bed. Sterilite's holiday-specific line — ornament cases, a wrap box, a wreath box — exists and is not on this page, because its figures are published where we could not read them.
Why one brand gets its own page
Not because we have tested it against the others; we have not tested anything. Because Sterilite publishes interior dimensions on nearly every product page, and interior dimensions are the figures this entire site runs on. When a maker prints that a bin is 18 7/8 inches tall inside, we can tell you a 13-inch ornament box stands up in it. When a maker prints gallons, we cannot tell you anything.
That habit makes Sterilite unusually easy to buy correctly, and it also means the brand name alone tells you very little: the lines differ enormously in seal, height and shape, and the right one is decided category by category.
Every Sterilite we have measured, on published interiors
Sterilite bins on this site, by published interior and holiday use| Bin | Inside dimensions | Closure | Best holiday use |
|---|
| 27 Gal Stacker Tote | 20 1/8" x 14 1/8" x 18 7/8" | Recessed lid | Ornament boxes upright; the bulk categories |
| 66 Qt ClearView Latch Box | 19 7/8" x 13 3/8" x 12 7/8" | Latches | One category per bin, identified without opening |
| 80 Qt Gasket Box | 21 7/8" x 16 1/8" x 12 1/8" | Silicone gasket, latches | Paper, fabric and cords in a damp space |
| 54 Qt Gasket Box | 18 7/8" x 12 5/8" x 11 3/4" | Silicone gasket, latches | A sealed box one person carries |
| 40 Gal Wheeled Industrial | 30 1/2" x 16" x 17 1/8" | Grip latches, drip-resistant lid | The heavy garage bin; long hardware |
| 66 Qt Ultra Storage Box | 37 3/8" x 18 1/8" x 6 7/8" | Lid, wheels | 40" wrap rolls under a bed |
| 56 Qt Wheeled Latching Box | 30 1/8" x 15 7/8" x 6 1/4" | Latches, wheels | 30" rolls or a flat layer, latched, under a bed |
| 27 Gal Industrial Tote | Not published | Latches | Low attics; our skip, for the missing figure |
The last row is the exception that proves the rule. The Industrial tote is the one line here that does not publish its interior, and it is our skip on the main ranking for that reason alone, even though its 15 1/4 inch outside height is the right shape for a low attic. Everything above it can be checked before buying; that one cannot.
The right Sterilite for each category
Ornaments. The Stacker. A 128-ornament box publishes 13 to 13.5 inches of height and stands up inside 18 7/8 inches; it does not stand up inside the 12 7/8 of a ClearView. The divided box goes inside the tote and the tote does the crush protection.
Lights and hardware. A ClearView, because it is the one category you go looking for first and a clear bin means you do not open five to find it. Reels and a hardware bag fit its 19 7/8 by 13 3/8 inch floor.
Wrap. The Ultra under-bed box for 40-inch rolls, on its 37 3/8 inches of interior length; the Wheeled Latching Box for 30-inch rolls where a latch matters more than the extra length. Both are 7 inches outside, which is the figure to check against the bed frame.
Anything that cannot get wet. The gasket boxes, packed bone dry. Paper, stockings, the tree skirt, anything with a cord or a battery box. The seal is a published gasket and a stated rating rather than a lid shape, and the full argument is on waterproof holiday storage bins.
The heavy bulk. The 40-gallon wheeled tote for foliage, outdoor decorations and long hardware on a garage floor. It is the longest interior in the category and the only one here that moves itself; the trade is on wheeled and rolling holiday storage.
Clear or opaque, within one brand
Sterilite sells the same interior in clear and opaque, and the choice is not cosmetic. Clear is for the categories you search for; opaque protects printed paper, ribbon and painted card from fading in a garage with a window. The reasoning, and which categories go which way, is on clear versus opaque Christmas storage bins.
The holiday-specific line we did not rank
Sterilite makes purpose-built holiday containers: a 20-compartment ornament storage case, adjustable ornament boxes, a two-layer stack-and-carry ornament box, a 30-inch vertical wrapping paper box and a nesting wreath box. Searchers ask about them by name, and they deserve a straight answer.
The answer is that we have not ranked them because their specifications are published on pages our tools could not read, and every retailer listing we tried was blocked. We do not print an interior dimension we have not seen, so they are listed here and not scored. If you are considering one, the figures to look for on the packaging are the compartment size on the ornament products — three inches is standard and nothing larger fits — and the roll length on the wrap box, which is a 30-inch product and will not take a 40-inch holiday roll.
Stacking across the lineup
The Stacker's 10, 19 and 27 gallon sizes share a lid footprint and stack in one column, which is the feature that makes a mixed set tidy. The 56 and 106 quart latching boxes share a lid the same way. The gasket boxes publish a reinforced recessed lid for stacking and the maker's instruction to keep the heaviest at the bottom. The wheeled tote is a bottom-of-stack product by nature, and nothing with wheels should go on top of anything.
The published outside-to-inside gap varies a lot across these lines — from about two inches on the thin under-bed box to more than six on the wheeled industrial — and it is the reason to plan on interiors rather than the number on the label. The full interior table for every bin we rank, from any brand, is on holiday storage containers by capacity.
What we cannot tell you
Whether a Sterilite bin lasts longer than a Rubbermaid one, or whether any of these lids seal as well as the page says. We rank on what the maker publishes, we have not handled any of them, and the holiday-specific products are unranked precisely because we could not read their figures. Our method is at how we pick.
